May Commuter Challenge

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—In an effort to spark a commuting mentality that's not based around personal automobiles in Michigan, Ann Arbor-based GetDowntown is organizing the second annual Commuter Challenge.

The idea is simple and the contest is easy: Over the month of May, participants in the Commuter Challenge are encouraged to ride, walk, skateboard, moped, carpool, vanpool and take mass transit to and from work and log their time and miles on www.GetDowntown.org. Basically any trip one makes to and from work without driving alone can be counted toward the commuter's ride log. Organizations and businesses around Ann Arbor with the most commuter miles logged wins!

If you log at least one commute you have a chance to win a prize. The grand prize winner, the person who logs the most miles, however, will win an Amazon Kindle, valued at over $200.

GetDowntown has structured the event with themed weeks, each emphasizing a different mode of transportation including walking, biking, mass transit and car/vanpooling. Participants in the Commuter Challenge can stop at different kiosks throughout Ann Arbor during the different phases of the competition and be rewarded with different prizes and incentives to keep up with their commuting alternatives, including free drink cards, bicycle repairs, complimentary coffee, tea and snacks. There's even a side competition that will award prizes to the best Commuter Challenge Kiosk.

Check out the details on our events page and be sure to sign up for the Ann Arbor Commuter Challenge! Who knows? Maybe you'll be inspired to start walking to work everyday.
